Summary Quality of jute determines its end users. Traditionally, jute industries are a heavy textile industries manufacturing Hessian, sacking, carpet bagging cloth etc. in the recent years a number of diversified uses of jute have been developed and the jute industries has also undertaken diversification programmes and ventured into production of diversified products. For diversification of jute products supply of superior and finer quality of fibre has to be ensured. Thus improvement of quality of jute fibre has assumed much important in the recent times.Availability of high grade good quality fibre is limited due to scarcity of high volume of free flowing sweet water, improper retting technologies and post harvest management that leads to shorter length, dull colour and rough surface with increase proportion of cuttings and faults.Alternate retting technologies (mechanical, machano-microbial) and post harvest management with the use of polyquat solution and hemicellulose pectinase enzyme may be practiced for obtaining a high grade good quality fibre

Challenge/Issue Most of the jute farming is taken up by small and marginal farmers with a poor resource base. Adoption of improved technologies by these farmers has shown lukewarm progress. This situation has contributed to non uniform productivity of 87 jute growing districts in varying agro-climatic regions of India. Availability of high grade good quality fibre is limited due to scarcity of high volume of free flowing sweet water, improper retting technologies and post harvest management that leads to shorter length, dull colour and rough surface with increase proportion of cuttings and faults.
Method During retting:
1.Emerge the basal portion of the plant (1 ft) in 5% urea solution for 3 5 minutes.

2.To accelerate the rates of retting apply Aspergillus culture 500g / 100Kg of fibre before retting. It also reduces the content of root fibre.

3.Do not use soil clots, banana stem, freshly cut logs of mango or bel as weighing material. Use water hyacinth, coconut leaves, brick, concrete block, bamboo etc which could not discolour the fibre.

Post harvest quality improvement:

1.For colour improvement : the jute fibre as obtained are dipped in the polyquat (modified carboxylic derivative) solution containing @ 1 2 ml/l of water for 2 3 minutes. Its instaneous reaction works on the jute fibre epidermis and yields a natural golden colour of its surface thereby increasing its commercial value.

2.Reduction of root content: Emerging the basal portion of the fibre in the enzyme solution containing hemicuellulose pectinase enzyme results in reduction of root content of the fibre and improved quality. The dose is 3ml/l of water and the time of emergence should be 3 5 minutes.
Lessons learned Use of good quality, disease free healthy seeds should be taken for sowing.Variety should be location specific best suited to that particular agro-climatic regions.

Balanced application of fertiliser and maintenances of proper plant spacing increases the yield as well as quality.
