Solution Effective control of stem borer and leaf folder for higher productivity and returns from paddy
Country
Last update: 19/10/2006
Summary Stem borer and leaf folder are major insects whose are affecting paddy productivity by attacking the crop at vegetative and reproductive stage. Paddy is a major kharif crop in paddy-wheat production system and the cultivated varieties of paddy are prone to the attack of stem borer and leaf folder. In some cases, impact of stem borer and leaf folder attack is so severe that it reduces paddy yield by 35-40 per cent. Farmers are applying unidentified and sub-standard chemicals, which do not control stem borer and leaf folder very effectively. Application of recommended doses of insecticides for control of stem borer and leaf folder will increase the productivity and returns from paddy. To reduce the indiscriminate use of insecticides for control of these insects use of environmental friendly bio-agents are also recommended.

Challenge/Issue High incidence of stem borer and leaf folder at vegetative and reproductive stages in paddy reduces productivity and returns.

Method Farmers of paddy-wheat region are applying unidentified sub-standard chemicals, which have no control measures. For best control of insects, following insecticide schedules are recommended:
1. Monocrotophos 38 SL @ 1.0 litre/ha spray (three sprays at 30, 50 and 70 days after transplanting).
2. Carbofuran @ 7.0 kg/ha at 30 days and Monocrotophos 38 SL @ 1.5 litre/ha at 50 and 70 days after transplanting.
3. Trichogramma japonicum @ 1.5 lacs wasps/ha

Lessons learned Chemicals manufactured by standard firms are costly and hence the adoption is sometimes affected by this factor.
Use Carbofuran @ 7.0 kg/ha at 30 days and Monocrotophos 38 SL @ 1.5 litre/ha at 50 and 70 days after transplanting to earn maximum returns.
Application of Monocrotophos 38 SL @ 1 lit/ha/spray (three sprays at 30, 50 and 70 days after transplantation) also proves effectives for the control of stem borer and leaf folder.
Use bio-agents for control of stem borer and leaf folder for better quality produce.
