Solution Bending of guava shoots for crop regulation
Country India
Last update: 08/10/2006
Summary Without forcing guava plants generally give fruits in rainy season in West Bengal. Fruits in this season are more prone to diseases and pests and quality is also not up to the mark. For this reason, off season fruiting of guava (in winter) through crop regulation is more desirable to get higher yield as well as quality produce. It also ensures higher return to the farmers. Growers of Baruipur region of South 24 Pargana district of West Bengal have evolved unique technique for crop regulation in guava. This technique is commonly known as Bending of guava employed at the age of 2nd year of plant. During summer (April June), the new shootlets emerged within 8 to 10 days of bending. And during autumn (Sept. Nov.), the new shootlets took 20-25 days to emerge. Bent branches should be untied when the new shootlets is about 1 cm in length. Flowering occurs in the new shootlets at 4-5 pair of leaf stage, after 45-50 days of summer bending & 60-65 days of autumn bending.

Challenge/Issue The rainy season fruits are
1.More prone to disease and pests.
2.Not of superior quality.
3.Insipid and watery fruit.
4.Fetch low return.
Method 1.This practice is very much dependent on training of guava branches. On the basis of calculation of expected flowering, the branches of guava plants are bent down about 45-60 days before the expected date of flowering and to produce fruits in the off season.

2.First time bending of branches of guava plant should be employed at the age of 2nd year of plant.

3.Before bending, the leaves, small shoots, flowers & fruits from branch are removed or cut off, keeping 10-12 inch of terminal twig intact.

4.During summer (April June), the new shootlets emerged within 8 to 10 days of bending.

5.During autumn (Sept. Nov.), the new shootlets took 20-25 days to emerge.

6.Bent branches should be untied when the new shootlets is about 1 cm in length.

7.Flowering occurs in the new shootlets at 4-5 pair of leaf stage, after 45-50 days of summer bending & 60-65 days of autumn bending.

8.Manures & fertilizers should be applied 15 days before bending of branches & again at pea stage of fruit growth followed by irrigation.
Lessons learned 1.The technique is easy, environment friendly and economically viable.

2.Off season fruiting gives higher return to the farmers.

3.The fruits are less prone to diseases and pests, thus results in higher yield.

4.The quality of fruits is better than that of rainy season.'

5.The economics of bending is also profitable.
