Summary In the context of the bilateral cooperation between Suriname and French Guyana the French Development Organization AFD approved a project called “Further Strengthening Surinamese Labcapacity and French-Surinamese Cooperation in the Field of Environmental Health in the Marowijne
Border Region”.
The project was submitted by the chemistry department of the Central Laboratory of the Bureau of Public Health (BOG). In addition to strengthening the capacity of the chemistry lab to analyze several heavy metals in human matrices and prove its proficiency for this, the project included also a pilot study aimed at gathering data on the level of exposure to mercury, lead and
aluminum among pregnant women in district Marowijne.
