Summary In recent years the responsibilities under internationally recognized standards have been clarified for supply chain responsibility vis-à-vis wages. Since 2011, the UN Guiding Principles for Human Rights and Business (UNGPs) and the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises (OECD Guidelines) both address living wages, partly by focusing on the angle of human rights, and partly by focusing on specific labor rights.

This is a very difficult issue to tackle for companies and their supply chains. However, in order to reach the Sustainable Development Goals and for companies to fulfill their corporate responsibility, enterprises should dramatically scale up and speed up their good practices towards living wages in global supply chains.
