Bush Radio is Africa's oldest community radio station project and is based in Cape Town, South Africa. It broadcasts on 89.5 MHz FM. The idea of Bush Radio started in the 1980's when community activists and alternative media producers began to explore ways of using grassroots media for social change - and as an alternative voice to the media available under apartheid. Tanzania: Mlimani Radio 106.5 FM (Part One)
The University of Dar Es Salaam is the oldest and biggest public university in Tanzania. One of its schools is the School of Journalism and Mass Communication (SJMC) which was established by the government in 1975 - and today has more than 300 student enrolled. The school offers a Bachelor degree programs in Journalism, Mass Communication as well as Public Relations and Advertising. In this audio slideshow - student Maria Alphonce discusses the school's radio station "Mlimani Radio, 106.5 FM, which provides a valuable "hands-on" experience for media students to practice what they have learnt in the classroom. Pamoja Radio99.9 FM is a community radio station formed in 2007 to empower youth of Kibera and its surrounding area through education and information. In this clip, station founder and manager Adam Hussein, along with key staff, talk about the goals of Pamoja, the support of USAID and it's training policies. Pamoja FM offers internship opportunities to college students to enable them have hands on experience on journalistic practice. In rural areas this often exceeds 95%. REF has met this need by turning local communities on to solar. Recognising that the products are nothing without the local entrepreneurs to promote and install them, REF has trained local networks of budding entrepreneurs. As a result, in only three years 300,000 people in nine countries have gained access to solar energy. And better quality light gives opportunities for study, income-generation and leisure activities as well as vital access to radio and mobile phones.

Giving Voice to the Voiceless - The African Farm Radio Research Initiative
Enock Kyambaddee, a supporter of AFRRI believes radio is the best tool to inform and educate millions of farmers in Africa. Enock works as a Farm Manager for Uganda Rural Development Training Center (URDT) in Kagadi Kibaale. He also volunteers as an extension support officer for AFRRI. In 2008, he attended the radio broadcaster's capacity building program. Since then he has supported the Kigadi Kibaale radio station in producing and broadcasting radio campaigns on agriculture topics that are important to local farmers. Enock says that radio "Gives voice to the voiceless"We can't agree more, and we will continue to support small-scale agriculture in Africa to make sure farmers are able to have a voice in their own development.
